Seeds of Success: STEM Girl Ambassador Program

The aplication period has closed. Please check back in April 2020.

Seeds of Success: STEM Girl Ambassador Program, consists of workshops to allow high school girls in Puerto Rico to learn more about careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), feed their curiosity and creativity, and help them become STEM ambassadors in their communities.

The workshops will be offered and designed by scientists and engineers, our "Borinqueñas", to help girls learn about the different careers in these fields and how they contribute to Puerto Rican society. The program will be offered in two regions in Puerto Rico and will include a visit to a scientific laboratory, giving the girls a true appreciation of the environment of academic research. As part of the program, the girls will receive mini-grants to carry out STEM outreach activities through which they impact at least 30 more girls. In this way, these young scientific leaders will help us maximize our impact by becoming STEM Ambassadors.

Girls in 10th - 12th grade during the 2019-2020 Puerto Rican school year

  • Learn more about careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)
  • Meet scientists and engineers, our "Borinqueñas"
  • Feed your curiosity and creativity
  • Perform science and engineering activities with the help of "Borinqueñas"
  • Receive a $50 mini grant for an outreach project that will inspire 30 girls or more to participate in STEM
  • Develop your leadership skills! You can impact your community through science and engineering

Where and When?

The girls should choose a region and commit to attend both workshops in the region:

  • Mayagüez: August 10, 2019 & September 7, 2019
  • San Juan: August 17, 2019 & September 14, 2019

Free! The participants will receive breakfast, lunch and a snack.

We are looking for girls who want to know more about STEM and have an impact on their school and community.

Students also must identify and ensure the participation of a mentor to help them with their outreach project so that they can become "STEM Ambassadors." The mentor can be any responsible adult that helps motivate the student to think creatively about how to carry out the STEM Ambassador activity to impact at least 30 more girls. Many girls choose a teacher, friend of the family, or family member who can help them. The mentors will be invited to attend the second workshops that will take place in September (September 7 in Mayaguez or September 14 in San Juan), but their attendance will not be required.

The students can develop whatever STEM Ambassador projects they would like to do, with the mentor's advice. During the workshops, the girls will be able to refine their plans for their STEM Ambassador project with the help of the Semillas de Triunfo staff and the "Borinqueñas". The only requirement for the projects is that they are focused on exposing other girls (of any age) to some topic related to the STEM disciplines. In the past, students have organized "coding" hours, scientific festivals where they invite student science organizations, scientist school visits, excursions to biotechnology companies, butterfly learning gardens, etc. All students will receive a $50 stipend for any expenses necessary for their project.
