A New Strategic Direction
A participatory science ecosystem
Puerto Rico is at a decisive moment. Educational, economic, and community challenges require culturally anchored, community-centered approaches that empower people. Our collaborators from diverse sectors—from education to science, media, community development, and philanthropy—agree on one thing:
CienciaPR is not just a program provider. It is a platform and a movement.
After a year of conversations, facilitated strategic work, and a deep analysis of our programs and participant profiles, four truths emerged:
- People want science they can use to solve real problems in their daily lives.
- CienciaPR's connection to Puerto Rico's culture and realities is unique and essential to making science meaningful.
- CienciaPR's network is a superpower, but it is underutilized.
- To scale its impact, the organization needs unified pathways and a robust infrastructure.
This strategic plan builds on these insights to evolve CienciaPR from a constellation of strong programs toward a scalable participatory science ecosystem, redefining how scientific knowledge is generated, shared, and applied in Puerto Rico.
Vision
A society where people and communities use science as an everyday tool to enhance their ability to lead and transform their realities.
Mission
We connect a diverse community of scientists, students, educators, and community members to build collaborative and culturally relevant pathways that enable the generation and application of scientific knowledge to solve Puerto Rico's most pressing challenges.

Our Big Hairy Audacious Goal
By 2031, CienciaPR will build and scale a participatory science ecosystem, where communities and scientists share power in knowledge production, education fosters scientific engagement, and science drives equitable and transformative change.
Strategic Objectives
Our strategy is based on three core objectives, drivers that will propel CienciaPR towards its bold and ambitious big goal for 2031.
Objective 1: Build the Participatory Science Model
A unified ecosystem for learning, applying, and co-creating scientific knowledge.
Key actions:
- Define and publish CienciaPR's Participatory Science Ecosystem Model
- Create a unified "front door" through the web, memberships, and tools
- Establish "community science hubs" with municipalities and local partners
- Launch "diaspora hubs" with members of the Puerto Rican diaspora
- Pilot and validate the ecosystem model through initiatives, programmatic units, the organization, and Puerto Rico.
- Produce a replication kit to scale the model within and outside of Puerto Rico
This transforms CienciaPR from a program provider to an ecosystem architect.
Goal 2: Build Leadership Pathways Across the Ecosystem
Developing leadership pathways for students, educators, scientists, and community members.
Key actions:
- Integrate programs into coherent learning pathways towards leadership
- Formalize the third programmatic unit: Scientific Talent and Leadership
- Review strategic plans of programmatic units
- Define activities and collaboration among units
- Launch certifications, micro-credentials, and networks of past participants and alumni
- Activate 18,000+ members as learners, mentors, and volunteer leaders
- Build a Mentorship Hub
- Create spaces where the community of members and allies recognize contributions to participatory science and generate constructive discussions about Puerto Rico's challenges that can be solved through science-based leadership.
- Raise awareness, visibility, and recognition of scientists, students, educators, and community leaders who integrate science into our culture and daily life.
- Establish an annual awards and recognition event.
This creates pathways from curiosity → capacity → leadership → impact.

Goal 3: Strengthen Organizational Capacity and Sustainability
Infrastructure needed to scale impact.
Key Actions:
- Modernize digital infrastructure (web, CRM, data systems)
- Strengthen grant management, evaluation, and reporting
- Diversify income through crowdfunding, donations, services, corporate partnerships, and grants
- Establish new strategic partnerships for positioning and growth
- Expand operational and programmatic capacity
- Invest in leadership and team well-being
- Create a resilient operational foundation for growth
This ensures CienciaPR scales sustainably and with excellence.
