Río Piedras, Puerto Rico (March 14, 2022) - The U.S. Forest Service announced the appointment of Puerto Rican scientist Grizelle González as director of the International Institute of Tropical Forestry (IITF).

Dr. González will assume, as of today, the position held for 40 years by scientist emeritus Ariel E. Lugo, and before him, the pioneer of the study and conservation of forests in Puerto Rico, Frank H. Wadsworth. In this way, she becomes the first woman to direct the Institute.

Graduate of the Department of Physics and Electronics of the UPRH hired by NASA 

(Humacao, P.R.) - Ms. Shamir Maldonado Rivera, a graduate of the Department of Physics and Electronics of the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao (UPRH) was hired by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) to work in the area of electronic engineering, focused on research and development of aerospace technology.

The nonprofit organization distributed a total of 250 posters and other educational materials about Puerto Rican and Latina women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics to be displayed in schools and to expose young people to culturally relevant role models.

Carla Pamela Puig Mojica, a graduate of the Department of Mechanical Engineering (INME) of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) Mayagüez Campus (RUM), received the Women of Color (WOC) Technology Rising Star Award, given nationally in the United States by Career Communication Group, Inc. to young women of ethnic diversity, with less than 15 years in the workforce, who contribute with their performance to forge the technology of the future.

The Aguadilla Campus of the Inter American University of Puerto Rico is the only institution in Puerto Rico that will be part of a collaborative effort that will establish an Integrated Biology Institute focused on viruses. Together with researchers from four institutions in Arkansas and Maine and funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF), viral interactions and mechanisms at all levels of life will be studied.

NIMHD co-authored study using ethnically diverse sample population identifies more type 2 diabetes-linked genomic regions than European-only studies

A large scale study that included multi-ethnic participants has identified more genetic regions linked to type 2 diabetes-related traits than if the research had been conducted in Europeans alone.

The study, titled “The Trans-Ancestral Genomic Architecture of Glycemic Traits,” was published in Nature Genetics, and co-authored by Director of Clinical and Health Services Research at the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, Dr. Larissa Aviles-Santa, on behalf of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos (HCHS/SOL).

Gonzalez, assistant professor of gastroenterology and equine surgery at the NC State College of Veterinary Medicine, is one of 21 early- and mid-career faculty earning this year’s distinction.
