Carmen Guerrero Pérez, secretary of the Puerto Rico Department of Natural and Environmental Resources, Cynthia K. Dohner, the director of the Southeast region of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, and Liz Agpaoa, forester for the Southeast region of the US Fish and Wildlife Service, announced that two Puerto Rican parrots were hatched in a natural nest in the wild outside of El Yunque, a milestone in 144 years.

The project that would create Puerto Rico's first National Model Forest will be presented in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday said Governor Alejandro García Padilla, underscoring that this would be a historic project.

The area covered by the forest included 390,000 acres and spans 20 municipalitie and the purpose is to promote the sustainable management of the natural area.

In 2012, Las Cabachuelas cave system was designated as a natural reserve. Unfortunately, the money destined to promote its conservation its being used for other purposes, putting this important ecosystem at risk.
