The Scientific Community Demands Resignation of Dr. Carmen Deseda, Puerto Rico's State Epidemiologist

The Puerto Rico Science Policy Action Network launched a petition on March 19, 2020, to demand the resignation of the state epidemiologist in Puerto Rico, Dr. Carmen Deseda, because we understand that Dr. Deseda does not have the necessary expertise in health public and epidemiology, and has failed to prioritize science and evidence in her decision making. We reproduce the text of the petition below. As of today (3/24/20), 185 people have signed the petition, of which 34% identified themselves as graduate students, 34% as professionals with a PhD, Ms, MPH, Ms or DrPH and 32% identified as other (private sector, public sector, contractors, concerned citizens, etc.).

Amigos, un miembro de nuestra comunidad que se encuentra dando apoyo en los esfuerzos de detección de COVID-19 en Colombia, nos comenta que la enzima Reverse Transcriptase está escaseando en ese país.

Si alguien tiene un clon o cultivo de E.Coli expresando RT, o si tienen alguna otra manera de ayudarlos a conseguir la enzima, los científicos de Colombia se lo agradecerían.

Convertir el miedo en acción

Es normal tener miedo ante algo desconocido. Y no es para menos, el nuevo coronavirus ha cruzado fronteras sin pedir permiso y casi sin darnos cuenta. Hemos sentido su impacto a nivel mundial tanto en la salud pública como en la economía. La palabra pandemia nos hace recordar tiempos difíciles, como lo fue el virus de influenza H1N1 en el 2009, el cual se expandió a 214 países y cobró cerca de 18,000 vidas confirmadas (aunque se estimaron alrededor de 200,000). El gobierno de Puerto Rico no ha sido eficiente en su respuesta, pero eso era esperado. Sin embargo, a nivel individual y comunitario, es primordial convertir el miedo en acción. Y que seamos el refuerzo que necesita el sistema de salud pública.

COVID-19 has been classified by the World Health Organization (WHO) as a pandemic due to the number of cases reported worldwide. In such a scenario, the general community has become interested in learning more about what this virus is, what we know so far, and how it compares to other viruses.

The Puerto Rico Public Health Trust (PRPHT), was given the task of developing the “Achú” Activity Book, to educate children about the new Coronavirus COVID-19. The book was created with the idea of ​​raising awareness in children, in a simple and fun way, of the world’s reality in relation to this disease, which is already considered a global pandemic, and nobody is exempt from it.
