Now more than ever, with the economic crisis, it is important to look towards the future and develop projects that contribute to the sustainable development of Puerto Rico. For this reason, the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) and the organization Mentes Puertorriqueñas en Acción (MPA) established an alliance to offer young individuals the opportunity to kick-off and implement renewable energy projects.

A pilot project to be developed in Yauco will turn food waste intro electrical power and compost. The project is a collaboration between the Center for Sustainable Agriculture Small Businesses and Technology of Yauco and the Polytechnic University of Nicaragua.

The National Wildlife Refuge in Vieques is the only one of its kind in Puerto Rico to produce its own electricity based on solar power. For that they will be recognized by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
