For the first time since 1992, when the Puerto Rican parakeet aviary was established in the Río Abajo State Forest in this municipality, more than 200 will fly freely in their habitat, after 60 chicks were born in the wild during this breeding season, which runs through June.

For the first time in 11 years, the Legislature of Puerto Rico is considering a project in favor of endangered species that would give the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources the ability to carry out activites to create awareness about these vulnerable species.

A team composed of members from state and federal agenicies and biologists, freed 31 Puerto Rican Parrots in the Maricao State Forest with the objective that they reproduce in the wild.
