This year, the Arecibo Observatory celebrates its 50th birthday. The site has been visited by countless of scientists from all over the world, by students from kindergarden to college and has become a famous touristic destination.

Among its important contributions to science, the Arecibo Observatory has helped elaborate maps of distant planets, calculated distances between galaxies, registered waves that have traveled millions of light years, and observed new galaxies being born.

NASA chose the young woman from Arroyo, and member of CienciaPR, for a Mars pre-exploration project

Yajaira Sierra Sastre aspires to be the first woman astronaut from Puerto Rico. Her goal is closer at hand now that she has been selected to participate in the Hawaii Space Exploration Analog and Simulation (Hi-SEAS), an important project financed by NASA to study important aspects of how to sustain astronauts traveling and living in Mars.

La probatoria que enfrenta la Universidad de Puerto Rico con los fondos de la Fundación Nacional de la Ciencia (NSF) ha causado que se detengan proyectos que subsisten por medio de propuestas federales de la NSF en el Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo, adscrito al Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez, y proyectos en el Centro de Recursos para Ciencias e Ingeniería, adscrito a la Administración Central de la UPR.

NASA Aeronautics Undergraduate and Graduate Scholarships

Undergraduate awardees will receive funding for up to two (2) years of study. 

Students awarded scholarships under this program will be provided an internship opportunity at a NASA center performing aeronautical research between their junior and senior year.
