The Puerto Rico Astronomy Society (PRAS), organization recognized by the NASA Puerto Rico Space Consortium, informed that this week there will be a rain of shooting stars that will be observed at simple view from any part of the Island.

Arecibo - The Arecibo Observatory is the first line of defense against asteroids that could collide with earth and cause a global disaster. These events have occured in the past, leading to massive extinctions. These space rocks are analyzed by a radar at the Arecibo Observatory to obtain their size, composition, speed and trayectory.

San Juan, PR, May 5, 2016 — The San Antonio College in collaboration with the Astronomy Society of Puerto Rico, invites the general public to tune in to the live transmission of planet Mercury's transit in front of the sun on May 9 between 7:12am and 2:42 pm (Puerto Rico time). The transmission will take place in the new facilities of the San Antonio College in Rio Piedras.

Puerto Rico will be the host for the National Space Society's 35th Annual International Space Development Conference (NSS-ISDC). The event will take place from May 18-22 and famous personalities such as Buzz Aldrin, Alan Stern, Orlando Figureoa and Ellen Ochoa, amongst others will share the experiences in space.

Astronomers detect a quasar of more than 10 trillion grades d

With the help of the Arecibo Observatory, international astronomers recently discovered that the temperature in the center of a quasar, an astronomic source of electromagnetic energy, could be more than 10 trillion grades, negating the established theory of 100 billion grades.

Planet Mars gets close to Earth

One of the astronomic events of the year will be the closeness between Mars and Earth on their respective orbits. Although Mars will only appear to be brigher than usual to the naked eye, this closeness will allow observers to view details on the Planet Mars, such as ice on the north pole, through their telescopes.
