Astronomers identified, for the first time, the location of repetitive emissions called fast radio bursts (FRB) to a galaxy 2.5 billion years away. The Arecibo Observatory played a key role in identifying the location of these FRB.

These events have occured in the past, leading to massive extinctions. These space rocks are analyzed by a radar at the Arecibo Observatory to obtain their size, composition, speed and trayectory.

With the help of the Arecibo Observatory, international astronomers recently discovered that the temperature in the center of a quasar, an astronomic source of electromagnetic energy, could be more than 10 trillion grades, negating the established theory of 100 billion grades.

Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are mysterious and rarely detected bursts of energy from space. They have durations of milliseconds and exhibit the characteristic dispersion sweep of radio pulsars.

These events emit as much energy in one millisecond as the Sun emits in 10,000 years, but the physical phenomenon that causes them is unknown.
