San Juan, Puerto Rico – The development of new drugs against malaria, the creation of hybrid technologies to further communications and aviation, as well as advances in biotechnology to purify water, are several of the initiatives that will be made possible thanks to the awarding of grants for 12 scientific projects, given by the Puerto Rico Science, Technology & Research Trust.

The Puerto Rico Science Technology and Research Trust announces that it has assigned $4.7 million for the funding of investigator initiated projects in Puerto Rico. The award of these funds will follow a formal Request for Proposals (RFP) process, soon to be announced. Awards will be competitively evaluated and will be assigned based on the nature of the project and the quality and feasibility of the research proposed.

The Puerto Rico Science, Technology, and Research Trust will sign a collaboration agreement with the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) to develop a Research and Economic Development Institute for Puerto Rico. The initiative will promote collaboration between industry and academia to develop commercial products or technologies.
