San Juan, Puerto Rico – Alberto Bacó, president of the Council of the Puerto Rico Science, Technology & Research Trust, announced today the appointment of Luz A. “Lucy” Crespo as the organization’s new chief executive officer. The appointment represents a key step forward in the development of Puerto Rico’s public policy focused on research in science, technology and innovation, as a means to driving the Island’s socio-economic growth.

The University of Puerto Rico will be a key partner in a collaboration to develop a vaccine against HIV, together with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and CDI Labs, and with the support of the Puerto Rico Science, Technology and Research Trust, the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company and the National Insitute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases.

The Puerto Rico Science Technology and Research Trust announces that it has assigned $4.7 million for the funding of investigator initiated projects in Puerto Rico. The award of these funds will follow a formal Request for Proposals (RFP) process, soon to be announced. Awards will be competitively evaluated and will be assigned based on the nature of the project and the quality and feasibility of the research proposed.
