With the goal of advertising the new undergraduate academic offerings, the Computational Sciences and Software Engineering Programs from the Electric and Computer Engineering Departments at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus held the first UPRM Hacks App Inventor. This camp admitted 27 high school students to particpate in the program during the month of july.

Seven high school students participated in a four week long summer research experience the Nanotechnology Center at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus. During the program the students participated in workshops with topics such as laboratory safety, search of scientific literature, Excel use, etc. The camp ended with a research poster competition where students were able to communicate their research experience and learn from peers.

The PR Weather Camp is an initiative led by the Department of Marine Sciences at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus. The program has been running for a decade with the educational mission to reach pre-college students and introduce them to environmental and meterological sciences.

During the month of June the Center for Research Excellence in Science and Technology (CREST) of the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez held its traditional summer camp for high school students and its Research Program for school teachers. This summer, seven (7) high school students (10th & 11th grade) participated. We congratulate Cristina Figueroa, Angelie N. Figueroa, Coralysmarie Rosado, Cristina Crespo, Yomar J. González, Jeremy Márquez y Amir Gómez for their participation and effort.

Two doctoral students from the Marine Sciences Department at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus developed an educational application to identify Caribbean fish. This app was named Artedi in honor of Peter Artedi, known as the father of Ichthyology, the branch of zoology that studies fishes.

This interdisciplinary effort brings together students from multiple colleges from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez Campus. One of the Master's students who graduated last week from the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) at the Mayaguez Campus, will be publishing his thesis work on the discovery of a new species in the entomology field. Fernando González Delgado, discovered the new species of fly Calycomyza portoricensis.

Puerto Rico wins gold in the XVIII Central America and Caribbean Math Olympiad

The Puerto Rican team, obtained gold, silver and bronze in the Central America and Caribbean Math Olympiad celebrated in Jamaica. The delegation composed by Gustavo Santiago, Miguel Tulla y Omar Santiago, succesfully obtained the second place amongst the 13 countries competing.

Nuestro cuerpo tiene la capacidad de adaptarse a cambios en nuestro ambiente, pero cuando estos cambios son muy rápidos nos vemos afectados grandemente. Las burbujas pueden visualizarse como algo inofensivo e inútil, pero dentro de nuestro cuerpo, y en otros campos del saber, tiene un papel crucial. Cambios rápidos en la presión que es ejercida sobre nosotros puede provocar la formación de microburbujas que afectan nuestra salud.
