Passion for education and the extended family of CienciaPR

During my PhD, I really missed being close to my family in Orocovis and interacting with other Puerto Ricans that also wanted to contribute ideas to the scientific development of the island. I wasn’t sure where to start so I decided to invite Dr. Daniel Colón Ramos, a professor at Yale University, to offer a seminar to students and professors of my program at Brandeis University. Daniel agreed, and without realizing it, I got involved in one of the most rewarding projects of my professional life.

First, a reflection:

Access to science opportunities—to the privilege and power of science—is not equitable nor equal. This was my truth—and that of many people I know—growing up. I didn't have much access to role models, to programs, to information. I didn't know I could be a scientist. Once I became a scientist I made it my mission to leverage my knowledge and privilege to make science accessible to people like me.

Dr. Mónica Feliú-Mójer didn’t know she could be a scientist until she was in college. Born and raised in the small town of Vega Alta in Puerto Rico, Feliú-Mójer was passionate about exploring the natural world as a girl, but her K-12 science classes did not make direct links between her local environs and the scientific concepts covered. It wasn’t until she met her first real scientist, biology professor Dr. Agnes Martínez Lahoz at the University of Puerto Rico in Bayamón, that her idea about what she could do in the world changed.
