With the purpose of training the next generation of scientists from Puerto Rico and providing more tools and resources for the development of research proyects that will create the neccesary conditions to avoid the escape of talent from the Island, the Puerto Rico Clinical & Translational Research Consortium (PRCTRC), adscribed to the Medical Sciences Campus (RCM) of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR), started a collabortion with the Yale Clinical Center for Investigations (YCCI) of the University of Yale.

According to Dr. Abel Baerga, Professor at the Medical Sciences Campus from the University of Puerto Rico, human beings have been overfishing the oceans leading to a decrease in the principal source of Omega 3, a bacteria that resides inside those fish. For this reason, his laboratory investigates the Biosynthesis of polyunsaturated fatty acids in marine bacteria, with the purpose of reproducing the compound in a different bacteria with the capacity to be grown in the lab.

Higher risk of chikungunya contagion in municipalities like San Juan

A research conducted at the University of Puerto Rico at Cayey found that the mosquitos spreading the Chikungunya virus do not survive in colder temperatures, therefore places like San Juan and Guayama are at higher risk for spreading the virus.

Neuroscientist shines at regional conference

Marla Rivera-Oliver, a graduate student at the Institute of Neurobiology of the University of Puerto Rico, was selected to present her research in the oral Neuroscience session at the Southeast Regional IDeA conference in Biloxi, MS (Nov 11-13, 2015). Marla’s presentation, "The Modulatory Effects of Caffeine on the Intrinsic Properties of Spinal Lateral Motoneurons", a collaboration with Yocasta Alvarez-Bagnarol and her research mentor Dr. Manuel Diaz-Rios, received a commemorative certificate and a $500 award. She was the only neuroscience graduate student to be selected for an oral presentation. 

We are proud of Marla, who is also a volunteer with CienciaPR. Congratulations!
