The Yale Ciencia Academy (YCA) aims to develop well-rounded scientific leaders and professionals. Completing a science outreach project is one aspect of the program that helps fellows advance towards this goal. The 2017 class of YCA Fellows led and implemented a series of science outreach projects to put into practice the communication, teaching and leadership skills they learned during their year in the program. The projects included various podcasts, a full-day symposium on deaf mental health, and a new blog in a major Spanish-language newspaper.

One of the most challenging decisions to make for most young adults is choosing a career path to follow. In the United States, about one-third of students enrolled in bachelor’s degree programs changed majors (National Center for Education Statistics), but the challenge doesn’t stop there as it is even more difficult to figure out what to do after obtaining that degree. Ten years ago, when I was living in Ecuador and trying to figure out what to do with my life, I would have never imagined that I was going to decide to pursue a doctorate degree in Chemical Biology.

Asthma: A Multifactorial Disease

Last semester, I did an internship at the Allergy, Asthma and Immunology Clinic of the Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where we specialize in treating patients with chronic respiratory disease. Soon after starting my clinical rotation, I noticed the large number of visits from Puerto Ricans, especially women. Alarmed, I decided to investigate the reasons for this trend, and I went to the library to find more information about the subject.

I remember that moment as it was yesterday. I was seating in the living room with my family chatting about school and our plans for the summer. At that time, I wasn’t sure about my plans. I was thinking of taking some free time or maybe one summer class. However, I am not the kind of person that always has a plan, so I was just waiting to see what the summer had to offer, but then something unexpected happened! I received a notification on my phone about a summer research program that I had applied a couple of months back. A lot of emotions came through my mind, so I ran to my room to read the email:
