My main research interest is microbial activity in extreme environments. My research has taken me to the bottom of the ocean to study deep-sea hydrothermal vents, cold seeps, and deep-sea brine lakes. I have also been involved in heavy metal contaminated sites, and oil and gas spill. More recently I have been working in low diversity high pH subsurface fluids from the Coast Range Ophiolite in California, and the Liguiran Ophiolite in Italy.
My main research goal has been to study carbon fixation metabolism, primary productivity and oxidation of methane and short chain alkanes. I use a combination of metagenomic data with culturing experiments, radio tracers, stable isotopes tracer. Work in progress involve RNA extraction, RT-PCR and metatranscriptomics.
