En junio de 1986 una delegación del Recinto de Ciencias Médicas de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (RCM-UPR) llegó al Instituto Pasteur en París, Francia para reunirse con el equipo de los doctores Luc Montagner y Françoise Barre-Sinoussi.  Tres años antes, en 1983, este grupo de científicos había descubierto el virus de inmunodeficiencia humana tipo 1 (VIH-1), el virus que causa el Síndrome de Inmunodeficiencia Adquirida o SIDA. Justo antes de esta visita, la Dra. Barre-Sinoussi había descubierto un segundo subtipo del virus, VIH-2.
