In 2004 the Kansas Court of Appeals ruled that Steven L. Thomas, who had obtained a medical degree from the University of Health Sciences Antigua but spent only eight weeks on campus, could not use the title of M.D.
"Because Thomas's medical education and training is vastly inferior to that of licensed M.D.'s, Thomas's continued use of the M.D. designation in imitation of licensed M.D.'s diminishes the general esteem of the M.D. title," the court wrote.

The American Association of International Medical Graduates may have been the most ambitious of all such watchdog efforts. From 2000 until this summer, the association was run by a doctor named Thomas Moore, who died in August. Mr. Hughson then took over the group's Web site. While the association does not have many members, he says, it did arrange for evaluators to visit Caribbean medical schools. Their reports, often harshly critical, were posted on the Web site.
In its final set of evaluations, made before the site went offline in September, the association failed half of the 24 schools it evaluated. One school with a failing grade was the University of Health Sciences Antigua.

Dear friends of Grupo Guayacan,
It is my pleasure to inform you that Grupo Guayacán, Inc., together with the Inter American University of Puerto Rico, Metropolitan Campus, has been selected by Stanford University as the host of the Stanford Roundtable on Entrepreneurship Education (REELA 2011), a prestigious international conference on Entrepreneurship Education. Academicians from 12 countries have confirmed their participation in this 3 day conference (Oct 19-21). Their participation ensures that REE LA 2011 will be a significant forum for sharing knowledge relating to international business education.
Puerto Rico to host international conference on entrepreneurship led by Stanford University
We believe this is the ideal moment to bring a conference of this caliber to the island given the many universities offering entrepreneurship curriculums in Puerto Rico on both a Bachelors and Masters degree level, in addition to an emerging number of active entrepreneurship centers. Our close relationship with several scholars dedicated to high-impact business education, motivates us to find the best educational tools available worldwide to ensure that new generations of entrepreneurs can have access to world class education.
Grupo Guayacan, Inc. is committed to world-class training in entrepreneurship
For three days, academicians will hear presentations from world renowned experts in the field of entrepreneurship including: Tom Kosnik and Leticia Britos from Stanford University and John Mullins from the London Business School. They have all developed innovative core courses that can be included in the curriculum of local universities and specialized entrepreneurship programs.
To complement the conference´s educational content with practical examples, the REE organizing committee has invited entrepreneurs from across Latin America to share their experience with the growth of their businesses and their opinions about the importance of higher entrepreneurship education for future generations. We are confident that their stories will encourage our local entrepreneurs. For example, Patricio Miranda, owner of Zott will tell us how he has been able to successfully export toys to 25 countries from Argentina; Mariana Iturralde will share the story of Agrotakesi, a company that exports coffee from Bolivia to Asia and is ready to enter the U.S. market. And we would be remiss if we did not listen to the testimonial of our local success story, Angel Pérez of Rock Solid Technologies, a company that has become a source of pride for all Puerto Ricans.
I urge you to participate in REE LA and share this information with anyone who may be able to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity.
We look forward to seeing you at the 2011 REE LA conference!
Sincerely,
Juan Carlos Costas
Executive Director
Grupo Guayacán,Inc.

I was so sorry to hear about all of this. I am a Family Physician in California and affiliated with the Rural-PRIME program at UC Davis School of Medicine. My wife, Ana Maria, was born in Vega Baja and we travel to La Isla once or twice a year. I am Anglo, but bilingual, bicultural.
I had an idea to start a program called the
Bridge Across the Sea or El Puente A Traves Del Mar, in which medical students from Puerto Rico would take elective rotations in California, and medical students from California would take elective rotations in Puerto Rico.
In May, we traveled to La Isla and visited with medical students and faculty members at various schools about this project. I gave a talk at San Juan Bautista about how I chose Family Medicine as a career.
It was very well received, and we had a warm welcome from everyone there (I had the feeling that not too many Anglo doctors from the States visit the Puerto Rican medical schools). We went out to lunch with a group of students "para comer comida criolla" at a local restaurant.
We have wonderful memories of that trip, and Ana Maria made an album containing all of the pictures we took with the students. My advice is don't give up hope. The Boricuas are strong people used to overcoming adversity!
Buena suerte con todo, amigos!

Javier:
