I just got this e-mail from another postdoc at Stanford: "This is a grant opportunity for postdocs who have undergraduate, graduate, or medical school student loans. It's a relatively little-known program appropriately called the 'Loan Repayment Program' (LRP). I found it by looking around the NIH website. I think LRP is mostly an intramural NIH grant, which is why it doesn't get much extramural advertising, but it's available to most of us working in nonprofit research. LRP will repay up to $35,000 a year of your student loans (most appear to qualify for repayment) for two to three years for doing research in areas that they feel needs an incentive to be studied. You are still responsible for an amount equivalent to 10% of your current postdoctoral salary (for most of us, between $3500-4000), but the rest is taken care of by LRP. There are five research areas that currently qualify: 1. Clinical Research 2. Pediatric Research 3. Health Disparities Research 4. Clinical Researchers from Disadvantaged Backgrounds 5. Contraception or Infertility Research I chose to pitch my proposal to #2, as I work on Toxoplasma, which causes birth defects. I sent LRP the research proposal that I sent to NRSA (which I am now funded by). LRP accepted the proposal, and will be paying back a sizable chunk of my student loans over the next two years. There is a small bit of maneuvering that needs to be done if you are concurrently funded by both NRSA and LRP - you will have to defer your NRSA service obligation until after your two year stint on LRP is up, but this is relatively trivial to handle, involving one fax. Anyways, LRP has a relatively simple online application (nothing like the NRSA application), and the grant could be of great benefit to some of you. Here's the website: http://www.lrp.nih.gov/about/index.htm the applications are due by 12/1/06."

I join the rest of you in sadness and shock over Ivan's drowning. I knew from one brief but intense meeting. Along with daniel Colon Ramos, who has written of the same meeting, I met Ivan in Greg Quirck's laboratory duting an afternoon visit over a year ago. When Daniel called me Saturday to give me the tragic news, he had to do not reminding me of who Ivan was in the sense that I immediately got a powerful mental image of this enthusiastic young man, excited about his work, neurobiology and loife in general. I invited him to Mayaguez toi talk to our group and this had not happened before his heroic action took his life. his drowning has affected a far wider community than one would expect from his few years on this planet! I feel good that there is a forum to put these few thoughts down and do my own small part to recognize the life of a wonderful person and to mourn for him and celebrate the vitality of Ivan that I observed albeit briefly. I hope that there is an opportunity for a memorial fund to be created at the Ponce School of Medicine. My sincere condolences go to his girl friend and his family who must all be devastated.

My name is Jorge Velez-Juarbe, I am a Geology student at the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez with an interest in the field of Vertebrate Paleontology. I just recently published an interesting paper on the ancient ecology (paleoecology) of a late Jurassic (159-144 million years ago) pond or swamp deposit, in Wyoming. This paper is the result of an undergraduate research project I did in 2004 during a summer internship at the National Museum of Natural History Smithsonian Institution. Carrano, M. T. and Velez-Juarbe, J. 2006. Paleoecology of the Quarry 9 vertebrate assemblage from Como Bluff, Wyoming (Morrison Formation, Late Jurassic). Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology, V. 237 (2-4), p. 147-159. Vertebrate paleontology is a field that not many people practice (or know about) here in Puerto Rico. I am completing my undergraduate degree in order to continue to graduate school and be one of the few researchers to practice this field in the island. If you would like more information on the paper or vertebrate paleontology in Puerto Rico, feel free to contact me (find my info at my CienciaPR profile).

Hello, Two years ago, in 2004, I participated in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, Research Training Program for Undergraduates. This is a fantastic internship that allows the participant to experience research opportunities in his or her favorite area of study. In my case it was in the Department of Paleobiology, with Dr. Matt Carrano the curator of Dinosauria, as my advisor. This program not only allows the participant to be a researcher at one of the best museum and research institution in the world, but also offers the opportunity to visit the different collections and departments they have. During this internship I was able search for dinosaur fossils in the badlands of Wyoming and also visit another museum, the Peabody Museum in New Haven, Connecticut. As a result of my internship project, I co-authored a paper with my former advisor, Dr. Carrano, which just came out in the August 2006 issue of the journal Palaeogeography, Palaeoclimatology, Palaeoecology. I was also able to meet other researchers in the museum that will help me in future investigations in the field of vertebrate paleontology. Jorge

  • Reply to: UPR budget cut
    hace 17 años

I believe this is a normal part of the budget making process, and I am sure happens very often to other public universities. The politicians are under pressure to cut spending and the university probably seems a better target than other agencies. In response, the university President, and eventually faculty, staff, and students, have to argue and lobby for support. What is worrisome is the effect further budget cuts will have on the quality of the education and research activities in the university. What is needed is that those who benefit from the University (and I would argue, *ALL* Puerto Ricans benefit) demonstrate their support. By contacting their representatives in government, by speaking out in favor of the University, and by making donations to their alma mater (a very effective mechanism for transformative change at many higher learning institutions around the world).
