Message from the President of AAAS Caribbean Division
Welcome to the 30th Annual Conference of the Caribbean Division of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). This years’ theme, “Attaining Sustainability Through Science and Education”, is particularly relevant due to the economic challenges that affect the Caribbean, which require the use of science and technology to develop a strong and sustainable society.
We dedicate this year’s conference to Casa Pueblo, a community-based organization that promotes, through the voluntary participation of individuals and groups, the protection of Puerto Rico’s enviroment. Casa Pueblo has had many significant achievents that have led to the conservation of land, flora and fauna. Also it has developed several projects that promote sustainability.
We are also please to annuonce that our keynote speaker is Dr. Sergio Jorge Pastrana, Executive Director and Secretary of Foreing Afairs of the Cuban Academy of Science. Dr. Jorge Pastrana’s visit to Puerto Rico cannot come in a time more appropriate in which the diplomatic relations between Cuba and the USA are staring to fluorish again.
Our concurrent sessions have been chosen to address issues directed related to this year main topic. Please go through the concurrent sessions and chose one that fits your interests. I hope that you enjoy this annual conference and continue supporting the activities sponsored by the AAAS Caribbean Division.
Sincerely yours,
Carlos A. Torre-Ramos, Ph.D
President AAAS Caribbean Division
