A fellowship is available in the Analytical Response Laboratory of the Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS) within the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
 
The selected participant will be involved with efforts to develop methods to measure human exposure to environmental chemicals, chemical threat agents and toxins using analytical techniques, including solid phase extraction, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. Specific opportunities may include:
  • Sample preparation, sample analysis, data processing, instrument operation and troubleshooting
  • Independent development of biomonitoring methods using LC-MS/MS or LC-HRMS
  • Experimental design, implementation, documentation and communication of results, issues and development progress
  • Observation of quality control requirements and preparation of analytical protocols, including method characterization and validation
  • Participation in emergency response exercises, proficiency testing and method validation
  • Preparation of peer-reviewed publications, presentations, summary documents and newsletter articles
 
The Research Participation Program for CDC is administered by the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE). The initial appointment is for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend depending on educational level and experience. The participant must show proof of health insurance. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC or the program administrator, and there are no fringe benefits paid.

  • A Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degree in chemistry or a related science received within the last five years.
  • Experience with mass spectrometry, liquid chromatography and/or solid phase extraction is desired.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.
