Program Overview

What: The Code for America fellowship is a full-time paid year of service for professionals in the technology industry, including developers, designers, product managers, and related roles. Cross-functional teams of three are embedded in local governments to develop digital tools that help cities and counties deliver key public services across health, economic development, and safety and justice.

Why: The Fellowship is your chance to use your skills to directly impact everyday people’s lives and transform government from the inside out. Our partnerships create cultural and structural change in local government by pairing technologists with government teams who want to create great services for the public, and enabling them to rapidly deploy technology that is easy to use, that works in real time, and that operates at a fraction of the cost that governments are used to.

Who: Fellows are mission-driven digital professionals with multi-disciplinary experience in engineering, design, user experience, research, GIS and product management. Fellows are curious, creative, entrepreneurial, and have a demonstrated commitment to teamwork and respectful communication. We welcome and support technologists from traditionally underrepresented communities. The one restriction: you must be eligible to work in the United States in 2017.

When: Start times for the next cohort of fellows will be August 2016 and February 2017. The fellowship is 9-month, full-time commitment.

Where: Fellows are based in San Francisco with extensive travel to their assigned city. Travel costs are covered by Code for America.

Salary: The salary for fellows is a $5K per month stipend, plus benefits.

How to Apply: Apply today on our jobs page. The application asks for basic information, a resume, a few questions about your interest in becoming a fellow and about your background, and a quick skill assessment. The application will take about 60-90 minutes to complete and we recommend using a computer to complete the application. Should you pass the first round, you will be contacted for follow up interviews.

Application Timeline: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and will close on July 15, 2016.

Questions: If you have questions about the fellowship or the application, click the chat bubble in the bottom right corner to talk to a staff member or email fellowship-staff@codeforamerica.org
