2008 Minority Fellows Program in San Diego, CA June 15-20, 2008 The application deadline date for the Minority Fellows Program is March 1, 2008. The program pairs graduate students, post-doctoral researchers and faculty from underserved populations at colleges and universities with industry Mentors. Fellows are introduced to the biotechnology industry during the Biotechnology Institute’s International Conference on Biotechnology Education, where Mentors and Fellows attend sessions on new and emerging technologies, mentoring, scientific content updates, and field visits to local industry and research facilities. All Fellows attend the subsequent BIO Annual International Convention. The program continues with a year of mentoring. Companies that have provided mentors are Amgen, Exelixis, Novartis, Genzyme, Gilead Sciences, Pharmanet, and several law firms involved in the development of patent law and intellectual property. The Minority Fellows benefit from the program as they: Ø Learn about the dynamic and multi-faceted biotechnology industry Ø Build a lasting relationship with an industry mentor Ø Discover new areas in which to apply an advanced science degree Ø Network and make valuable business connections and develop relationships with other Fellows and Mentors Ø Narrow down career foci and establish goals Ø Develop job search skills such as how to enhance a vita, refine interpersonal skills and conduct informational and job interviews. Recipients of these fellowships receive: Ø One-year of mentoring from a biotechnology industry mentor Ø Admission to the 2 days Fellows Training Program Ø Full convention access to the 2008 Biotechnology Industry Organization International Convention Ø Field trips to local biotechnology companies Ø 5 Nights lodging, local transportation and meals Ø Round-trip travel to San Diego, CA Ø Admission to the Biotechnology Awards Banquet Ø One year of individual membership to the Biotechnology Institute The Minority Fellows Program is sponsored by Exelixis, Inc.
