Program Details

The Data Science for Social Good program at the University of Washington eScience Institute is now accepting applications for student fellows and project leads for the 2021 summer session. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the program will be conducted remotely for the second year in a row.

Up to sixteen DSSG student fellows will be selected to work with academic researchers, data scientists, and public stakeholder groups on data-intensive research projects. Now in its seventh year, the program is open to graduate and junior/senior undergraduate students who are enrolled in a degree granting program in both spring 2021 and fall 2021.

DSSG projects leverage data science approaches to address societal challenges in areas such as human services, public policy, health and safety, environmental impacts, transportation, accessibility, social justice, and urban informatics. Projects may involve a range of stakeholders, including academic researchers, government officials, non-profit organizations, and the general public. In addition to project work, students participate in a wide range of data science tutorials, discussion-based workshops, and subject matter talks with experts from outside the program.

Students will be part of a team working full-time (i.e. 40 hours/week) on an applied research project that has concrete social relevance and impact. Students are expected to work with team members closely and collaboratively for the duration of the 10-week program from June 14th through August 20th 2021. In addition to project work, students participate in a wide range of data science tutorials, discussion-based workshops, and subject matter talks with experts from outside the program. Students receive a stipend of $7,000 for the 10 weeks.

Prospective students may visit the Call for Student Applications and Frequently Asked Questions page for more information, or join an Information Session on January 26th from 11:00am-12:00pm PST via a Zoom webinar. Register here to attend.

The DSSG program is also soliciting project proposals that are methodologically rigorous from academic researchers, public agencies, non-profit entities, and industry through February 22nd. One or two external Project Leads (typically the authors of the proposal) will work on each team with one or more Data Scientists from the eScience Institute, and four or five students who will be selected and paid by the eScience Institute.

More information is available via the Call for Project Proposals and FAQs for prospective project leads page. An information session will be held on January 19, 2021 from 10:00am–11:00am PST. Register here for the Zoom webinar.

This DSSG program is sponsored in part by an award from the Micron Foundation
