The Departments of Global Health and Exercise &Nutrition Sciences in the Milken Institute School of Public Health (SPH) at the George Washington University are jointly recruiting a tenured or tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor (12 month appointment). Rank and salary will be commensurate with qualifications. Department of primary appointment is negotiable, but the successful candidate will be expected to be engaged in both departments’ academic and research programs. 

The SPH has a diverse and growing faculty, with an approximately $80 million research portfolio. As the only school of public health in the nation’s capital, faculty and students have a unique opportunity to work closely with government agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the US Department of Agriculture, United States Agency for International Development, and the Food and Drug Administration, as well as the numerous non-governmental and international organizations that are headquartered in DC such as the World Bank, the International Food Policy Research Institute, the Pan American Health Organization, and many others.

The Department of Global Health has faculty with expertise in nutrition, maternal and child health, environmental health, infectious and chronic disease epidemiology and control, health communication, design, monitoring and evaluation of global health programs, medical sociology, demography, and economics.  The Department of Exercise & Nutrition Sciences has faculty with expertise in public health nutrition, nutritional epidemiology, exercise physiology, physical activity epidemiology, aging, obesity, and diabetes.  The Department of Exercise & Nutrition Sciences offers a BS in nutrition sciences and a MPH in public health nutrition.  The Department of Global Health offers three MPH degree tracks, and a DrPH.

Primary responsibilities for the position include an active role in global nutrition research, teaching, and service.  The successful candidate will bring or develop a successful externally funded research portfolio and devote at least 50% effort to this research, and 50% to teaching and mentoring both undergraduate and graduate students. It is expected that the successful applicant will conduct applied global field research and collaborate with other faculty in research in this area.  Example areas of research in the departments include, but are not limited to, maternal, child and adolescent nutrition, food security, nutrition and chronic disease, dietary intake methods, food systems for health, and community-based nutritional interventions.

Basic qualifications: Applicants must have a PhD in nutrition by the date of appointment (e.g. nutritional sciences, nutrition epidemiology, social and behavioral nutrition, nutrition communications), or an allied field such as medicine, epidemiology, behavioral science, or health communication.  Applicants must have experience in international public health nutrition with a focus on applied nutrition research, teaching and practice in the context of low and middle-income countries.  Applicants must have a demonstrated record of publication in the peer-reviewed literature and evidence of proposing and/or implementing funded research.
