Surfrider Foundation - Salva Tres Palmas Internship Rincón, Puerto Rico Summer 2007 The Surfrider Foundation seeks a graduate student for a summer internship to work on the Tire Removal for Elkhorn Coral Restoration project as part of the Salva Tres Palmas Campaign in Rincón, Puerto Rico. The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world’s ocean, waves and beaches through conservation, activism, research and education. For more info on Surfrider visit: www.surfrider.org/rincon Tire Removal For Elkhorn Coral Restoration: This project seeks to protect and restore the health of the Elkhorn coral (Acropora palmata) reefs near Rincón, Puerto Rico, by removing a large number of tires that may be damaging coral reefs protected by the Reserva Marina Tres Palmas. The Surfrider Foundation will also implement a community-based educational outreach campaign that will create and distribute solution-focused outreach materials addressing threats to coral reefs from sedimentation and marine debris. The Surfrider Foundation will work with local fishers, the Municipality of Rincón, Sea Grant, the Centro Interdisciplinario de Estudios del Litoral (CIEL) at UPR Mayagüez, and local citizens to implement the restoration and education and outreach efforts. Responsibilities include: working with local commercial fisherman on marine debris removal activities, collecting and entering information on marine debris removal into a database, managing and archiving digital photographs, coordination with Municipality, Commonwealth resource agencies and partner organizations, developing education and outreach materials, and report writing. Necessary requirements: Fully bilingual (writing and speaking), ability to work independently, strong communication skills. Scuba certification is a plus.
