SCIENTIFIC DIRECTOR Position Description Reporting Relationship: Reports Directly to the Executive Director of the Foundation. Responsibilities and Duties: • Working with the Director of Awards Administration, oversee the Foundation’s grant programs: Fellowship Award, Clinical Investigator Award and Innovation Award. Current program budget: $9 million. o Oversee program-related policy development and implementation. o Work with the Scientific Committee of the Board of Directors and award selection committees, including attendance at all meetings. o Read and approve all annual progress reports from award recipients. o Perform evaluations of programs to ensure their continued quality, relevancy and effectiveness. o Oversee the grantee database and electronic application and review processes. • Serve as the primary liaison to the internationally recognized scientists affiliated with the Foundation. • Plan and coordinate the Foundation’s annual postdoctoral retreat and other scientific symposia. • Write/edit scientific copy for the Foundation’s annual report, newsletters, website and other communications. • Participate in fundraising and other Foundation activities designed to promote awareness about the Foundation. Coordinate presentations by scientists at events and attend events as needed. Work with fundraising staff to develop proposals in specific areas of interest to donors or prospects. Oversee communications by award recipients with donors. Handle requests from donors about research supported by the Foundation and medical referrals. • Follow current trends in basic and clinical research related to cancer and keep the Board and staff apprised of new developments. Attend annual national cancer meetings (AACR, ASCO). Stay abreast of the biomedical research landscape and issues faced by early career investigators. • Identify and report on scientific discoveries by current and former award recipients, including their impact on cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment. • Interact with and establish new initiatives to increase involvement with, and support of, the Foundation by past award recipients. • Participate in the development of strategies to enhance awareness of the Foundation’s programs in scientific and lay communities. Liaison to scientific journals and publications. • Contribute to research funding policy through interaction with peers in the science funding community, policy makers and scientific leaders in areas relevant to the Foundation’s mission. Knowledge, Skills and Experience: • PhD, MD or equivalent advanced degree in science, medicine or related field. • Experience in the cancer research arena, including conducting research, reviewing scientific work, making presentations and writing peer-reviewed papers. • Minimum of 2 years experience in science-related work away from the laboratory, cancer relevance preferred. • Knowledge and understanding of the scientific peer-review process, the mechanics of scientific grant-making and the culture of academic medical centers. • Understanding of current trends in basic and clinical cancer research. • Outstanding oral and written communication skills, including the ability to translate scientific information for non-scientific audiences. Editorial experience a plus. • Strong administrative and organizational skills with the ability to take initiative handle multiple tasks concurrently and work independently. Creative and flexible problem solver. • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to interact with scientists and non-scientists at a variety of levels in a collaborative, effective manner. A record of success in working with a team to achieve common goals. • Willingness to travel as necessary. • A strong commitment to the mission of the Foundation.
