PREP provides post-baccalaureate students from underrepresented groups or from disadvantaged backgrounds with the support to work full-time in a laboratory at Johns Hopkins University. Scholars spend one or two years strengthening their research background and increasing their competitiveness for PhD applications via hypothesis-driven research in their Mentor’s lab, with day-to-day guidance by an experienced PhD student or postdoc, weekly lab meetings and department seminars, and present research posters at our summer research celebration, two vibrant PhD program retreats, and a national meeting of their choice.

Scholars will also participate in workshops designed to (a) improve spoken communication and scientific writing skills, (b) explore the PhD career spectrum, and (c) improve inter-personal skills by understanding their own strengths and ‘blind spots’. PREP also offers preparation for GRE exam, graduate school applications and interviews.

Application Dates: November 1, 2019 - February 15, 2020

Interviews: early April 2020

Matriculation Date: June/July 2020
