Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Cancer and Health Disparities

The University of Massachusetts Boston (UMass Boston) and Dana-Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC) jointly announce a post-doctoral fellowship designed to ensure a diverse and highly trained workforce to meet the national need for highly skilled faculty and researchers committed to better understanding and addressing cancer and cancer health disparities. The joint post-doctoral fellowship program allows collaborative training that can occur at either or both of the partnering institutions.

 

Fellowship Components

1) Research Training: Development and implementation of independent research with the guidance and mentorship of an experienced and funded researcher from UMass Boston or DF/HCC. Areas of emphasis for research purposes will include but are not limited to cell cycle control, development, cell signaling, and systems biology as it relates to cancer and/or cancer disparities.

2) Professional Development Training: Provide direction and resources for career guidance and preparation for an academic or research career. Resources will address leadership development, project management, training in grant writing and other skills necessary for success as an independent investigator with an established program of research.

3) Educational Preparation: Provide opportunities to develop teaching and pedagogical skills needed in academia. Teaching experiences occur on the UMass Boston campus, the most diverse University in New England. Fellows receive guidance from experienced educator-coaches.

 

Resources available to Post-Doctoral Fellows

Each post-doctoral fellow is eligible to receive financial support comprised of:

- Funding, $50,000 annually, for two years with an option to extend for a third year (Principal Investigator to provide additional funding based on post graduate year (PGY) level per institutional compensation policy)

- Financial support to attend one conference per academic year

- Partnership labs have access to multiple core facilities at both the DF/HCC and UMass Boston

- Mentorship support in preparing for an academic or research career

- Ability to participate in DF/HCC post-doctoral network and UMass Boston’s professional development activities

 

Eligibility Criteria

- Completed PhD in any basic science field applicable to cancer research

- Primary research interest in understanding and addressing cancer and/or cancer health disparities

- Applicants from various racially or ethnically diverse, or socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply
