Mentoring Academy Travel Awards for 2016 ASCB Annual Meeting (Dec 3-7)

Applications open from Oct 4 - Oct 25

Mentoring Academy Travel Awards are supported by a grant from the National Institutes of Health to the Minorities Affairs Committee(MAC) of the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB). They are intended to help postdocs attend the ASCB annual meeting to participate in the Mentoring Academy. New this year, the Mentoring Academy will be offered the Saturday before the meeting, and will include interactive workshops designed to assist postdoctoral fellows, including those from underrepresented groups, to consider and develop plans for their careers. The Mentoring Academy will be facilitated by experts in professional career development and by MAC members. Some sessions include:

  • “Mentoring Up: Communication Style Assessment” by Steve Lee from UC-Davis

  • “How to Set Up and Manage Collaborations” by Andrew Campbell from Brown Univ

  • “Preparing Grant Budgets” with a panel including Luis Cubano, Franklin Carrero-Martínez, and Elizabeth Bartlemez

To qualify for a travel award, you must be an ASCB member or have recently submitted an application for ASCB membership. As this is a federally-funded program, it is restricted to U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, and legal permanent residents. Postdocs from minority-serving institutions and from groups underrepresented in science are especially encouraged to apply.

Award Overview

Mentoring Academy Travel Awards are available to postdoctoral fellows to cover expenses to attend the Mentoring Academy sessions and the ASCB annual meeting. The maximum award is US$1800. To qualify for a travel award, an applicant must be:

  • U.S. citizen, non-citizen national, or legal permanent resident

  • Currently working in a postdoctoral position in a field related to cell biology (broadly)

  • An ASCB member, or have recently submitted an application for ASCB membership

  • Able to attend the full day of Mentoring Academy and Mentoring Symposium activities on Sat, Dec 3, 2016 and attend at least some of the regular Annual Meeting program

  • Willing to complete evaluation surveys and responses before and after the meeting

The proximity of the applicant’s institution to San Francisco will be taken into consideration when setting the award amount. The ASCB Minorities Affairs Committee will select award winners weekly from Oct 3 until Oct 25, or until our travel funds are exhausted. Award winners will be selected on the basis of their expressed need for mentoring in their science or career.
