The Georgia Lab is part of the Center for Endocrinology and Metabolism at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and the Department of Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. We are seeking a highly motivated, well-trained, outstanding postdoctoral fellow to join our growing group.

The Georgia Lab uses innovative approaches to develop new cellular replacement therapies for diabetic patients:

  • We use in vivo models to study how insulin-secreting cells can duplicate themselves to respond to increased demand for insulin. We plan to use this knowledge to design strategies to increase the number of insulin-secreting cells that remain in the pancreas of Type I diabetic patients.
  • We use in vitro models to study how insulin-producing cells emerge from stem cells during fetal development. By improving our understanding of how these cells are formed, we plan to direct non-pancreas cells to differentiate into insulin-secreting beta cells in the lab.
  • We use patient derived cell models to understand the role of beta cell dysfunction in genetic forms of diabetes.

We are specifically seeking a postdoctoral fellow with experience in culturing and differentiating human pluripotent stem cells. We have an exciting, patient-based project recently funded that needs an experienced set of hands ASAP.

Candidates must have a PhD or M.D. in biological science or a related field. The successful candidate should be able to manage multiple detail-oriented tasks with minimal supervision, be capable of trouble-shooting and critical thinking, self-motivated, dedicated and creative. Applicants with technical expertise related to islet biology, developmental biology, stem cell biology, viral gene transfer, gene editing and molecular biology are preferred. Familiarity with procedures including but not restricted to plasmid and genomic DNA isolation, cloning, cell culture, PCR, blotting, various tissue culture procedures and molecular biology techniques would be helpful. Candidate will also be directly involved in executing a wide array of in vivo technical procedures and will be required to work independently and as part of a team.
