The Society for Neuroscience, (SfN) a nonprofit, professional association of more than 42,000 members seeks a Senior Director, Communications and Public Affairs. SfN is a dynamic, highly respected, growing organization that plays a critical role in advancing neuroscience research, serving a growing international field, and promoting understanding of neuroscience among the public and policy makers.

The Senior Director will play a key organizational role, leading the development and execution of SfN’s high profile communication and government affairs strategies aimed at supporting the scientific research, advocacy and public education activities of SfN’s members. The Senior Director will ensure the organization consistently conveys to public audiences the progress, potential, and importance of neuroscience research, and builds greater awareness of, support for, and engagement with brain research by the public, public officials, and science educators. She/he will play a leadership role in strengthening awareness within SfN’s membership regarding organizational programs that support the neuroscience community, and will help increase the engagement of SfN members in Society programs through effective communications strategies.

The Senior Director will join a team led by a Deputy Executive Director (Program) and oversee staff in three departments: Policy and Advocacy (4 staff), Public Information and Outreach (9 staff), and Member Communications and Creative Services (9 staff).

The successful candidate will be a communications and advocacy professional with demonstrated success in developing and executing successful strategies. She/he will demonstrate particular skills in both oral and written communications and be experienced in effective use of new media. An ability to translate scientific knowledge to a lay audience is important and a dedication to scientific research, findings, and applications is essential. Demonstrated experience overseeing management-level staff and exercising significant budgetary responsibility are essential to the candidate’s success.
