The Pathways Intern Program is designed to attract students in a wide variety of educational institutions (high school, home-school programs, vocational and technical, undergraduate and graduate) with paid opportunities to work in agencies and explore Federal careers while still in school. This program exposes students to jobs in the Federal civil service by providing meaningful developmental work at the beginning of their career, before their career paths are fully established. This vacancy is established to meet hiring needs for the summer 2017 session.

These positions are located within the National Center for Enteric & Zoonotic Infectious Diseases with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention located in San Juan, PR. 

This HHS Position meets the criteria outlined in OMB M-17-18 and is exempt from the hiring freeze.

Duties As a Student Trainee (Biological Science) you will: 

  • Assist higher level technicians in support of research related to the biological sciences (i.e., pathology, physiology, toxicology and molecular biology).
  • Use laboratory equipment such as microscopes, centrifuges, incubators, and/or balances to perform standard test.
  • Maintain basic laboratory records of instrument operating procedures.

Qualifications For the GS-5, Applicants must have completed 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree at an accredited institution. 

For the GS-6, Applicants must have completed at least 6-months of graduate education in an accredited institution in a major field or study specific to this position. 

For the GS-7, applicants must have successfully completed 1 full academic year of graduate level education; or Eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision and completion of a bachelor's degree. Provisions for superior academic achievement (S.A.A) can be found at:

Undergraduates who expect to graduate in the Spring of 2017 must provide school acceptance letter verifying their student status prior to entering on duty.
