Occupational: Provide software engineering and programming support in the Duke Department of Biostatistics and Bioinformatics for a Center of Excellence in Genomic Science (CEGS). The position will be particularly involved in defining and developing the Center's data portal, supporting the data analysis and annotation pipeline necessary for the genomics community to interact with and benefit from the discoveries done by the Center. The applicant will work with genomics researchers, clinicians and other scientists working to understand the combinatorial gene regulation.
Work Performed: Design, develop and deploy the front- and back-end of Duke CEGS portal. Work together with scientists and bioinformaticians to ensure that data resources created by the Center are correctly and efficiently made available and visualized in the website(70%); Conduct simulation studies to evaluate and compare analysis and annotation pipelines and methods (10%); Advise faculty and students on software development (10%); Perform other tasks and special projects as assigned (10%).
Work Expectations: Develop efficient, reliable, robust, user-friendly, and well-documented software for public use; Create and maintain public resources for software in GitHub with Continuous Integration (CI); Adhere to Agile software development methodology (e.g. Scrum) to streamline the iterative software development life cycle; Consult with project directors, on an on-going basis, to develop long-range strategic alternatives; Lead complex projects; plan and organize the day-to-day work; reorganize work assignments and adapt to the workload of others to unanticipated changes.
Education: Work requires a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related quantitative discipline (Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Bioinformatics, Statistics), demonstrated expertise in web programming, and is highly motivated to learn the necessary statistics and biology.
