Are you an exceptional candidate who can provide scientific expertise and collaboration to one of the preeminent offices responsible for the support of extramural research grants in comparative medicine?  These positions offer a unique opportunity to serve as an integral part of a Division with responsibility for programs that provide funding for the development of and access to critical animal models, which offer essential clues to a broad range of human disorders such as Parkinson's disease, diabetes, multiple sclerosis, and HIV/AIDS.  This Division also supports funding for pre- and post-doctoral training and career development for veterinary scientists who provide unique expertise to translational biomedical research. The Office of the Director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking exceptional candidates for the positions of Program Director of Comparative Models and Program Director of Genetic and Biological Resources (Health Scientist Administrator GS-601-13/14/15), Division of Comparative Medicine (DCM), in the Office of Research Infrastructure Programs, Division of Program Coordination, Planning, and Strategic Initiatives (DPCPSI).

A Program Director in DCM provides technical leadership and scientific guidance in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of critical parts of the biomedical research continuum, providing support for animal models that build the bridge between basic science and human medicine, with discoveries in one species enhancing understanding of another. A Program Director also aids in establishing collaborations between DCM-supported grantees and grantees supported by the NIH Institutes and Centers; manages extramural research and research training programs; identifies research areas warranting either increased or decreased funding emphasis; and provides leadership and direction in the development of plans and timelines to implement new programmatic recommendations and in the development of new solicitations. These positions provide input in interpreting major polices relating to research programs that utilize laboratory animals, both mammalian and non-mammalian. A Program Director serves as a liaison with a wide variety of groups and organizations connecting biomedical research interests and other stakeholders.

We are looking for applicants with a commitment to scientific excellence and the energy, enthusiasm and innovative thinking necessary to participate within a dynamic and diverse organization. The ideal candidate will possess a Ph.D., equivalent doctorate degree or equivalent research experience and publications in the biomedical sciences and have research experience and knowledge of research programs in one or more scientific areas related to basic and/or translational research and the interactions between them. They also have demonstrated experience in planning, implementing and analyzing program objectives and priorities and leading a research program involving extensive internal and external collaboration.  Because this position will identify research animal resource needs, applicants should be knowledgeable in various aspects of laboratory animal sciences, including vertebrate and invertebrate species, animal genetics, molecular biology, and other relevant areas.

Interested applicants should visit http://www.jobs.nih.gov/globalrecruitment/ for application instructions. Questions may also be directed to Ms. Keyonna Butler at 301-594-4570 or butlerke@mail.nih.gov. Applicants are encouraged to browse the DPCPSI home page at:  http://dpcpsi.nih.gov.

The successful candidate for this position will be appointed at a salary commensurate with experience and accomplishments, and provided full Federal benefits, including leave, health and life insurance, retirement and savings plan (401K equivalent).
