The UCAR Next Generation Fellowships are intended for graduate students from underrepresented communities. Successful candidates receive financial support for two years of graduate school and the opportunity to spend two summers in internships with NCAR and UCAR. The program offers three distinctive tracks: Earth System Science, Diversity and Inclusion in the Earth System Sciences and Public Policy.

Earth System Science Fellowship

This two-year award provides financial support for graduate school and two summer internships. The internship is based at UCAR in Boulder, Colorado, in any of the scientific, engineering, applied mathematics, or computational labs of the National Center for Atmospheric Research or with one of UCAR’s community programs, whose activities range from providing data and software services to education, professional training, and public outreach.

The UCAR Next Generation Fellowship in Earth System Science is intended for graduate students that are:

  • attending a North American University
  • have U.S. or foreign citizenship
  • from underrepresented populations
  • holding an undergraduate degree in atmospheric science or a related Earth system science, such as one of the other geosciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, meteorology, oceanography, physics, or social science, and planning to actively pursue a graduate degree in atmospheric or related Earth system science

Diversity and Inclusion Fellowship

This two-year award provides financial support for graduate school and two summer internships. Applicants for this award will be pursuing projects in diversity and inclusion over the summer rather than scientific research. The internship is based at UCAR in Boulder, Colorado, with UCAR’s Office of Diversity and Inclusion.  The Office of Diversity and Inclusion focuses on programs that increase the representation of diverse individuals in the sciences, programs that improve the workplace culture to be welcoming and inclusive for all, and programs that integrate diverse knowledge and ways of thinking into our science and education programs. This fellowship is for graduate students who intend to finish their Ph.D. in the atmospheric and related Earth system sciences and are committed to championing increased diversity, equity, and inclusion in our field. We recognize that there are many ways to become diversity and inclusion champions, and therefore welcome applicants who intend to pursue a scientific research career and also applicants who intend to move into full-time diversity and inclusion work upon completion of their Ph.D.

The UCAR Next Generation Fellowship in Diversity and Inclusion is intended for graduate students that are:

  • attending a North American University
  • have U.S. or foreign citizenship
  • from underrepresented populations
  • holding an undergraduate degree in atmospheric science or a related Earth system science, such as one of the other geosciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, meteorology, oceanography, physics, or social science
  • planning to actively pursue a graduate degree in atmospheric or related Earth system science, and having a strong interest in becoming champions for diversity and inclusion in the geosciences

Public Policy Fellowship

This two-year award provides financial support for graduate school and two summer internships. The internship is based at UCAR in Washington, D.C., with UCAR’s Washington Operations Office. UCAR strongly believes that a diverse and inclusive public policy team enables us to better advocate for the sciences in terms of both federal research funding and policy related to the performance of research. We provide nonpartisan information to Congress, the White House, federal agencies, partner organizations, and industry to demonstrate the importance and value of the research and training provided by UCAR, NCAR, and the Earth system science community.

The UCAR Next Generation Fellowship in Public Policy is intended for graduate students that are:

  • attending a North American University
  • U.S. citizen (required for this fellowship)
  • from underrepresented populations
  • holding an undergraduate degree in atmospheric science or a related Earth system science, such as one of the other geosciences, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental science, mathematics, meteorology, oceanography, physics, or social science
  • wanting to focus on public policy and government relations and planning to pursue a graduate degree in atmospheric or related Earth system science with a focus on public policy
