The Division of Intramural Research (DIR), NEI, is seeking an exceptional candidate for the position of Deputy Scientific Director to help lead and manage the NEI intramural research program as an active partner with the Scientific Director. Clinical Tenure-Track Position

Laboratory of Neurosciences, NIA

The National Institute on Aging (NIA), a major research component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), is recruiting for a scientist for a Clinical Tenure Track position with the Laboratory of Neurosciences (LNS) within its Intramural Research Program (IRP) in Baltimore, MD. This position is 100% translational research, includes an attractive set-up package and operating budget, including access to extensive behavioral neurology databases, and provides the unique and extensive resources of the NIH.

The successful candidate will have a strong background and extensive experience in behavioral neurology and/or neuropsychiatry. An established record of clinical research accomplishment within the neurobiology of aging and dementia, expertise in the areas of functional MRI of brain, regulation of energy metabolism, and a strong publication record are essential. Preference will be given to those with demonstrated evidence for testing novel hypotheses and therapeutic interventions for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative disorders. The incumbent will play a major role in training staff and postdoctoral fellows and maintaining research continuity within the Laboratory, as well as developing a network of intra- and extramural collaborations. The incumbent is expected to demonstrate peer recognition of their specific contributions. An M.D. or equivalent degree is required and the candidate must be U.S. Board-Certified or Board-Eligible in neurology. The National Cancer Institute (NCI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is seeking a physician for its Thoracic Surgery Program. The successful candidate will come through the NCI’s Center for Cancer Research (CCR) Clinical Investigator Development Program, a training opportunity for physicians interested in dedicating their careers to clinical oncology research. CCR is nationally recognized for excellence in clinical research training and clinical research, all conducted in the state-of-the-art Clinical Research Center in Bethesda, Md.

The goal of the program is to assist board-eligible/board-certified translational researchers to transition from a mentored position to an independent investigator in patient-oriented research so that they will be highly competitive for tenure-track appointments in academia or comparable positions in government and industry. Qualifications: Candidates must be a U.S. citizen. Candidates with an M.D. and/or Ph.D. with relevant training and extensive experience are highly desired. Staff Clinician

Vaccine Research Center, NIAID

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) Vaccine Research Center (VRC) conducts research that facilitates the development of effective vaccines for human disease, primarily for HIV, biodefense, and emerging infectious diseases. The VRC Clinical Trials Core (CTC) includes clinicians, public educators, protocol specialists, and data specialists, as well as support staff. The CTC conducts clinical research and development primarily on HIV, emerging diseases, and universal influenza vaccines. The CTC maintains a staff of approximately 25 and initiates three trials per year at the NIH Clinical Center. The CTC also maintains and oversees contracts and collaborations with external clinical research organizations.

The CTC has a position for a staff clinician. The staff clinician will work closely with the CTC deputy chief, chief, and other VRC staff and will participate in clinical research strategic planning, clinical trials design, protocol development, clinical trials operations, and public outreach and recruitment for the CTC, as well as other responsibilities as assigned.

Specific responsibilities include the following:

1. •Design and implement clinical research for VRC

2. •Serve as associate or principal investigator for VRC first-in-human and other Phase I and II investigational vaccine and monoclonal antibody trials

3. •Design, conduct, and analyze data from clinical and translational vaccine immunology research

4. •Participate in VRC vaccine clinical development teams

5. •Serve as member to NIH and external committees and boards as assigned by the VRC

6. •Publish VRC clinical research findings

7. •Present VRC research findings publicly (domestically and internationally)

8. •Participate as team member, co-chair, or chair of domestic and international protocol/clinical trials teams involving VRC vaccine products

9. •Mentor junior scientists and clinicians, including clinical fellows

The NEI seeks to develop a new program in computational analysis that fully employs human genomic, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic, neurophysiological and clinical data sets to reconstruct biological networks characteristic of normal and disease states. The magnitude, diversity, rich information content, and hierarchical connectivity of these data sets require the utilization and development of novel quantitative tools. The goal is to understand human disease at a molecular level in order to develop mechanism-based therapeutic interventions.

We invite applications for head of a new laboratory of Computational Medicine within the NEI Intramural Research Program. This initiative seeks to integrate and translate knowledge from genetics and biology to a wide range of disease processes using systems, network, statistical and bioinformatics approaches.

* Examples in ocular biology amenable to a systems approach would include neuro-immune interactions, gene regulatory networks during disease pathogenesis, protein interaction pathways, neuron-glial-vascular biological networks in the retina, neuronal networks in the CNS, and developmental conditions and disorders.

* The research program has interest in developing novel computational methodologies for analyzing large genetic, biological, biomedical, neuronal, and functional data sets. Particular attention will be paid to genotype-phenotype correlations, gene-gene and gene-environment interactions. In parallel, we will actively seek to develop disease intermediate phenotypes that reflect the underlying biology and pathophysiology of disease.

* Data sets from large clinical trials, genetic studies (including GWAS), expression profiling in normal and disease conditions, and from the eyeGENE human research repository for monogenic ophthalmic diseases will be developed to reconstruct and understand ocular biological networks that link genetic perturbations, small molecule interactions, and physiological processes, to predict normal and disease states

The NEI/NIH provides an exceptional environment of dedicated scientists as well as a wide range of resources. We currently envision that this program will be located in the newly constructed Porter Neuroscience complex that houses a diverse set of investigators from many different Institutes. The successful candidate will be expected to recruit tenure-track faculty in areas that may include computational medicine or neuroscience, network biology, genetic or molecular epidemiology, cell and molecular biology, statistical genetics, bioinformatics, and biostatistics into the new Laboratory of Computational Medicine. Applicants should have a MD, MD/PhD or PhD and an outstanding record of accomplishments in genetics, epidemiology, neuroscience, cell and molecular biology, biostatistics, or a related quantitative discipline. Senior scientists would have the opportunity to maintain their participation in existing collaborative research in non-eye diseases if desired.
