Pensar en Puerto Rico sin el cantar de los coquíes puede rebasar la imaginación de cualquier boricua. La ausencia en la Isla de ese popular anfibio es casi impensable.

Pues sepa que, aunque parezca inverosímil que eso ocurra, durante las pasadas tres décadas, el país ha perdido tres especies de coquíes, y otras tres están hoy bajo la amenaza real de desaparecer. Un estudio del doctor Rafael Joglar concluyó que el Coquí de la Montaña sólo se encuentra en el Bosque Nacional El Yunque y en el Bosque Carite, al igual que el llamado Coquí Martillito.
