Durante el 2013 en Estados Unidos la misma clase de cálculo será enseñada sobre 10,000 veces por 10,000 profesores diferentes. Muchos de estos profesores no lo harán muy bien. A estas clases asistirán estudiantes que le pagan a su universidad entre $10,000 y $40,000 de matrícula al año. Los cursos en línea masivos abiertos (MOOCs por sus siglas en inglés) le permiten a un maestro enseñar a millones de alumnos simultáneamente y amenazan con acabar con un sistema que no ha cambiado mucho en sus últimos 50 años.
