Bienvenidos a CienciaPR, una red de recursos para todos los interesados en las ciencias y en Puerto Rico.
I am currently Director of the Department of Biology and also the Director of the UPRRP herbarium. I work primarily in floristics, plant reproductive ecology, biogeography and invasive species biology. I specialize on orchids, but my graduate students follow their own passions which has lead me to forays into the biology of mycorrhizae, vegetation characterization, floral fragrance analyses, and taxa other than orchids as model systems in the above fields of study.
Floristic projects: Orchidaceae treatment for the Flora of the Greater Antilles, Flora of Saba, and the Flora of the Bahamas. The former is almost completed, and the latter two are just underway.
Herbarium database project for the UPRRP herbarium. This is well underway with data from about half the collection available on the web (www.herbario.uprr.pr). We are seeking funds to expand this work.
Biology of invasive orchids of Puerto Rico. Some work on this is nearing completion while other aspects are just underway. As part of the Center for Research Excellence in Science and Technology (NSF-CREST) project at the Caribbean Applied Tropical Ecology and Conservation group at the UPR-Río Piedras, we have just begun long-term studies. This is done in collaboration with Raymond Tremblay (UPR-Humacao), José Carlos Rodrigues (UPR-RUM Experimental Station in Río Piedras), and Paul Bayman (UPRRP).
