A perennial focus of the lab is type 1 diabetes, which results from autoimmune destruction of the pancreas. We are identifying the immune cells responsible for attacking the pancreatic islets, as well as studying how beta cells respond to these attacks. We now have new tools to manipulate the immune system, aimed at early-onset diabetes in both mouse models and human subjects, with the ultimate goal to stop disease before it progresses to permanent organ damage.
