Estudia la relación entre los seres humanos y el ambiente para proponer de manera multidisciplinaria alternativas para la conservación de los recursos naturales y soluciones a problemas ambientales mediante propuestas para el desarrollo sostenible. Por consiguiente, provee la oportunidad para que los estudiantes puedan concienciarse en la problemática del impacto humano o impacto antropogénico en los sistemas de la tierra y promueve que sean ellos quienes busquen alternativas para mitigar ese impacto.

El 21 de septiembre de 2016, parte de la población de Puerto Rico presenció un apagón que para sorpresa de 1.5 millones de personas duró tres días. En Estados Unidos un sistema de producción, transmisión y distribución de energía eléctrica se considera confiable cuando ocurren apagones en una razón de 1 en 10 años. Basados en nuestra experiencia diaria sabemos que el sistema eléctrico de Puerto Rico no cumple con los estándares ya mencionados.

Condado Beach, between La Concha and Marriott hotels, is one of the most visited by tourists and locals and it's also one of the most dangerous ones due to rip currents. To address the issue a group of residents, supported by technical and scientific staff, are proposing the installation of an artificial reef, 150 meters from the coast.

El petróleo. En el Siglo 20, acceso a esta fuente de energía económica y abundante trajo una de las eras de mayor progreso en la historia humana. A nivel mundial, la llamada energía barata impulsó un gran crecimiento económico, expandió la agricultura, y promovió el desarrollo de nuevas tecnologías; permitió que el hombre caminara en la Luna. Aceleradamente, esta “Era del Petróleo Barato” se acerca a su fin. Para este año, la Administración de Información de Energía (EIA) de los Estados Unidos estableció que se consumirá 19.52 millones de barriles de petróleo y sus derivados al día en América del Norte a partir de un suministro de producción de solo 16.32 millones de barriles.

A recent report from the Environmental Quality Board revealed that many water bodies and reservoirs in Puerto Rico are contaminated with antibiotics, cosmetics, steroids, insect repellent and other types of emerging pollutants. Students and scientists at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez are turning to nontechnology to create filters that may help address this problem.

Protecting the scaly-naped pigeon

The scaly-naped pigeon (Patagioenas squamosa) is threatened by hunting in the Caribbean. At present, the pigeon is abundant in Puerto Rico, but overharvesting is a major concern; therefore, the development of a sustainable harvest strategy is a management priority. The management objective of the harvest strategy is to maximize hunting opportunity while keeping the population above an abundance threshold (NT) of 260,000 pigeons.

Scientists of the Soil Science and Geopharmacy Research Group of the University of Granada (Spain), directed by Rafael Delgado, have discovered and characterized a new type of atmospheric particle that develops similarly to hail, which could be useful for the study of relevant atmospheric reactions from Earth.
