En 2015, 75 de los 78 municipios de Puerto Rico se vieron afectados por una sequía que causó escasez severa y racionamientos en los suministros de agua. Según el Monitor de Sequías de Estados Unidos, ésta ha sido la sequía más prolongada en Puerto Rico desde el año 2000, cuando se inició la documentación formal de estos eventos. Esta sequía duró unas 80 semanas, tanto en Puerto Rico como en otras islas del Caribe.
