Identify Organisms from a Stream of DNA Sequences

Challenge Overview

This Challenge seeks innovative algorithms to analyze samples that contain mixed segments of genetic sequence from next-generation sequencing instruments and report the identities of each organism represented in the sample and characterization of all non-host organisms.  Technical details and requirements are available in the full description.

The IEEE-USA has begun soliciting applications for its 2013-2014 Government Fellows Program.  Each year, IEEE-USA sponsors government fellowships for three qualified IEEE members.  The fellows – chosen by the IEEE-USA Government Fellows Committee and confirmed by the IEEE-USA Board – spend a year in Washington serving as advisers to the U.S. Congress or to key U.S. Department of State decision-makers.

If Puerto Rico is going to have any chance of creating a biotechnology sector that creates quality research and independent-minded scientists for the island's biotech apparatus, the approach to research being conducted at the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) must be revamped. That is where a former trustee of the Science, Technology & Research Trust, Mariano García-Blanco, is saying we have to eliminate the political ebb and flow that propitiates lack of continuity and affects the quality of research at the university.
