Workshops on asthma management

Asthma is one of the main causes of absenteeism among students in Public Schools and one of the most common diseases among Puerto Rican children. To educate parents on asthma control and prevention –a disease that affects one in every three children in Puerto Rico- the Institute for Behavioral Science of the Medical Sciences Campus of the University of Puerto Rico developed the CALMA (from its acronym in Spanish) program (Take Control and Manage your Asthma). The program consists of workshops where health professionals educate parents on the causes of the disease, how to use medicines effectively and how to manage the symptoms, among other subjects.

No monkeys have been captured by DRNA

Georgie Ferrer, spokesmen for the United Front of Farmers of the Lajas Valley, said that the cages placed in the past weeks by the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources (DRNA) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) have not yielded any results, because they have not trapped any of the primates that lie freely in the southwest, causing damage to crops and wildlife. On the other hand the DRNA says that they have not trapped any monkeys yet because the mechanisms that make the 20 cages work are not active. According to the DRNA secretary, “We are placing bigger cages that will allow us to capture a whole pack.

Electronic waste is growing fast in Puerto Rico, and they are a serious environmental threat. When they are disposed in garbage dumps, the effect of rain and humidity makes them release toxic liquids (lixiviates) that contain heavy metals, like mercury, lead, cadmium and others. Thanks to an initiative by the Solid Waste Management Agency and Reciclaje del Norte, cell phones can be recycled and computers reused by other families. Electronic devices pick-up June 30th, 2007 Acuaexpreso parking lot in Hato Rey and entrance of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayaguez Coliseum. Computers, cell phones and chargers will be collected; game consoles, DVD players, and Hewlett Packard ink cartridges. Cell phone batteries will not be collected.

The climate, geological and hydrological conditions of the Corredor Ecológico del Noreste (Northeastern Ecological Corridor) “qualifies the area to be a natural reserve, a powerful reason to protect it”, reason why Representative Luis Vega Ramos urged the president of the Senate, Kenneth McClintock, to approve a law that declares the area between Luquillo and Fajardo a natural reserve known as the Northeastern Ecological Corridor.

With the purpose of driving innovation and entrepreneurial development the Department of State had its “First forum on brands and patents: Tools for the knowledge-based economy” on Friday, where they discussed the importance of intellectual property in the future of industry, economy and public policy in Puerto Rico. The activity created awareness of the shift in the economic picture, where capital accumulation is not a key factor in economic growth, but an abundance of knowledge is.

Global warming going at a faster pace

A study published recently by the National Academies of Science revealed that global warming is occurring faster than forecasted. Local experts say that the results of this study only makes the picture for Puerto Rico worse, because in a near future –before predicted- hurricanes can intensify and the sea temperature and level could increase, threatening the country’s infrastructure.
