Vint Cerf, as he prefers to be called, is one of the fathers of the Internet, technology he invented together with his friend Bob Kahn in 1973. This computer scientist, graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles, is still surfing the Internet wave. He has dedicated his life -and plans to keep doing so- to the development of the Internet and finding solutions to the problems that arise around its use. In this interview, he talks about the past, present and future of this important technology, the projected tendencies and his personal vision on the impact of the Internet around the World.

Exotic pets are dangerous

The introduction of exotic animals is a problem that has increased in the past few years. As a result of this practice, in Puerto Rico there are colonies of caimans, monkeys, boas and even recently, the presence of a Nile crocodile, whose bite can be fatal, in eastern Puerto Rico.

Although they have enough votes from both parties to approve the law that will make the Northeastern Ecological Corridor a natural reserve, Senator Carlos Diaz insisted yesterday that he still needs more information to “reconcile” the environmental and economical challenges of the measure. At the end of the first day of Senate meetings about the law, Diaz didn’t rule out modification to the version approved by the House in the past legislative session.

With the theme Learning Biotechnology as Team through Research and Interdisciplinary Centers, the Hemispheric Center for Cooperation in Engineering and Applied Sciences Research and Education (CoHemis) of the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez (RUM), had their summer camp BETTeR-IC 2007 from July 7 to the 13th. The purpose of the summer camp was to allow students and teachers to get involved and learn about biotechnology and related sciences.

Coastal residents will soon have a five-alarm system that will alert them of any tsunami threats, making Mayagüez the first city in Central America and the Caribbean to have this kind of alert system.

Cleaning our beaches

Around 300 volunteers picked up a few tons of garbage during a cleaning day in the Manuel Morales (Sardinera) Beach in Dorado, as part of the “Everyone together for the beaches” campaign, sponsored by Coors Light beer and its “Haciendo Ambiente” program. There are two other cleaning days planned for the campaign this summer. The next will be on Saturday, August 18 in Jobos beach in Isabela and in September, there will be another event in Vieques during Labor Day weekend.

Distrust in the eolic park

The proposed eolic park in the Punta Verraco and Punta Ventana area in Guayanilla keeps generating controversy between environmentalists and Windmar, the company proposing the Project. Puerto Rico’s environmentalists oppose the project for its closeness to Guanica’s Dry Forest and its possible harmful effects to the vegetation, the ecosystem and some endemic and endangered species that live in the area. The project was recently paralyzed after some irregularities were reported, even by the rangers of the Department of Natural and Environmental Resources.

According to nephrologist León Ferder, of the Ponce School of Medicine, cardiovascular disease and diabetes are products of the discordance between the human’s cultural and biologic evolution. However, this scientist says he found an agent to level this out, a mechanism to help the body fight the conditions associated with this deterioration and delay aging.
