Science News

Collaborations with various media allow us to create a bank of science news of relevance to the Puerto Rican and Hispanic communities and give a venue that our scientific members can use to keep their communities informed and engaged with science.

Also, the news archive can be used as a resource for students and educators

Worried about excessive consumption

This article is reproduced by CienciaPR with permission from the original source.

Some environmentalists and citizens believe that true changes, at the individual level, to adopt a “green” lifestyle will arise when consumers start recycling grocery store bags, bottles of water and make less use of other materials, like paper and disposable utensils. As every new trend, green products have become notorious; although some hybrid cars waste more gas than other compact cars or that a fluorescent bulb ends up consuming more energy than a regular one, because of their excessive use. For some environmentalists, the environmental movement is turning into another product, in which sometimes, the slogans are more popular than the results.

The high number of dengue cases reported during the past three weeks puts Puerto Rico in a state of alert on the possibility of a severe epidemic during this season, said the epidemiologist of the State, Enid García Rivera. Since January until June 30th, 1,497 cases have been reported, representing an increase of 545 cases as compared to the same period last year 2006, a year with low dengue activity. For the week of June 25-30, 110 cases suspecting the disease were reported, 81 more than in the same week last year. As preventive measures the public should eliminate breeding places, fumigate and use mosquito repellent containing DEET.

Active curiosity

One of humanity’s most intriguing questions is: Is there extraterrestrial life? About 500 scientists are discussing bioastronomy since yesterday in the conference Bioastronomy 2007, the most important meeting of this field, taking place in a hotel in San Juan. These scientists investigate the same questions that humans have been asking for centuries: Who are we? Where do we come from? Are we alone in the Universe? But these people don’t wait for an answer; they are actively seeking them all over the Universe. Daily they listen to the sounds of space, send satellites and probes to analyze other planets and speculate on what could be found someday.

In a trial, evidence is essential. In our Justice System, an individual is considered and found guilty only if there is sufficient and plenty of evidence against him. In science, evidence is very important too. But evidence is not always easy to find. When lacking evidence, we should use William de Occam’s -a priest from the XIV century with much interest in logic and science- advice. He suggested that we should, at least temporarily, while we gather evidence, the explanation that requires the least amount of suppositions.
