The office of Diversity, Education and Outreach at the Broad is responsible for the creation and delivery of innovative programming that aims to increase the number of students, especially those from historically underrepresented populations, entering and succeeding in STEM careers. Our office has expertise in developing and implementing curricula for middle school, high school, undergraduate students and post-baccalaureate trainees.

IF/THEN®, a national initiative of Lyda Hill Philanthropies, seeks to further women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) through empowering current innovators and inspiring the next generation of pioneers.

2018 Yale Ciencia Fellows help launch a science policy network, deliver professional development sessions at national STEM conferences and more

As part of their training and leadership development, Yale Ciencia Academy (YCA) fellows are required to create and implement a science outreach activity of their choosing. These outreach projects are meant to expand the impact of the program, by allowing YCA fellows to engage with young people, teachers, or other members of the public, particularly from communities traditionally underrepresented and underserved in science. In 2018, YCA Fellows completed a variety of projects, impacting more than 6,000 people.

Margaret A. Davidson Graduate Fellowship to do research in estuaries

It’s an exciting new fellowship program for graduate students at the national estuarine research reserves. One two-year fellowship opportunity will be available at each of the 29 coastal sites.

Through a research project, fellows will address a key coastal management question to help scientists and communities understand coastal challenges that may influence future policy and management strategies.

A team of scientists and students at the University of Puerto Rico in Mayagüez developed a material with magnetic properties that is able to remove components found in sunscreen that can be harmful to coral reefs and marine life.
