The underground cavern and aquifer system of northern Puerto Rico is unique in its class. But this underground world is threatened. Contamination, urban development and construction of dams have caused the disappearance of some of the species that inhabit these ecosystems and have rendered some aquifers useless as a fresh-water source.

Yesterday, 21 Puerto Rican parrots raised in captivity were set free as part of a program that aims to strengthen and help re-establish the population of this endemic bird. The endangered population of the Puerto Rican parrot barely reaches a total of 200 individuals, including those in captivity.
