Women are being filtered out of high-level science, math and engineering jobs in the United States, and there is no good reason for it, according to a National Academies report released on Monday. A committee of experts looked at all the possible excuses -- biological differences in ability, hormonal influences, childrearing demands, and even differences in ambition -- and found no good explanation for why women are being locked out.

Fifth Annual Intramural NIAID Research Opportunities (INRO) Program. Applications are now being accepted for participation in the INRO Program, which will be held February 4-8, 2007 at the National Institutes of Health campus in Bethesda, MD. The program brings academically talented students from underrepresented minority groups to the NIAID to learn about research training opportunities in the areas of allergy, immunology and infectious diseases.

Dear CienciaPR members, next week, September 25 - 27, a group of universities called the Ivy Plus (the Ivy League plus several of the top-universities in the US), will be visiting several UPR campuses. They will be offering orientation about the graduate programs they have and related concerns, such as financial aid, housing, prep exams, etc. I'll be going as a Cornell representative, and I'm hoping we will have a good turnout of students this year.

Urgent to move towards technology

Ronald Blackburn-Moreno, president of ASPIRA, a non-profit organization dedicated to leadership development and education of Puerto Rican and Latino youth, stated that Puerto Rico has great potential to develop a technology and knowledge-based economy in the forum “Connecting Puerto Rico towards a digital Puerto Rico: Encounter between Chile and Puerto Rico”. In addition, Blackburn-Moreno enumerated the challenges that the Country faces, which includes the lack of consensus on which specific economic development model we must follow, the political divisions, the bureaucracy and governmental inefficiency, and the lack of a public policy that promotes the development of the technological industry.
